Followed by a seated tasting experience, your host with share a custom selection of wines from the J.O. Sullivan Collection as you discover the exceptional wines Sullivan is best known for. Once welcomed into the private family residence, discover the nuances of quality Merlot through a blind tasting of two wines: a rare library vintage of J.O. Sullivan Merlot and an international expression from a highly regarded Right Bank producer from Bordeaux.

Following this hands-on educational tasting, you will have the opportunity to take a deep dive into a vertical of our J.O. Sullivan Merlot. Paired with a small selection of local and artisanal cheeses, enjoy this Conversation on Merlot while learning firsthand the remarkable depth, power and complexity that our J.O. Mornings include a multi-course culinary experience, thoughtfully curated by Executive Chef Jim Leiken. Prepared with local, seasonal ingredients, the experience includes freshly baked pastries from Bouchon Bakery, followed by a light course such as fruit, yogurt and house made granola, and culminates with a choice of a sweet or savory entrée.

EXECUTIVE CHEF JIM LEIKEN

With nearly three decades of culinary experience alongside some of the world’s most celebrated chefs, including Daniel Boulud, Michael Anthony and Cindy Pawlcyn, Executive Chef Leiken brings a unique perspective and philosophy to Sttupa Estate that is rooted in high-quality, seasonal ingredients.

Leiken’s career was first shaped by 12 years with the legendary Daniel Boulud, where he refined his approach to quality and precision while rising through the ranks at Restaurant Daniel and DB Bistro Moderne. In 2009, he opened DBGB Kitchen and Bar in the East Village as executive chef, earning praise for his creativity and commitment to high standards. Following his successes in New York, he was tapped for the role of executive chef at Café Boulud Palm Beach, FL.

In 2013, enamored by California’s agricultural bounty, its culinary community, and its promise for a more balanced lifestyle, Leiken relocated to Napa Valley for an opportunity to work alongside one of the region’s founding culinary champions, Chef Cindy Pawlcyn. For five years he was executive chef at Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen in St. Helena, followed by four years at Lucy Restaurant at Bardessono Hotel & Spa in Yountville.

In 2023, he joined Sttupa Estate, a property he long admired for its attention to detail and indulgent multi-course breakfast menu. At Sttupa Estate, Leiken calls his approach entirely “guest centered.” He prioritizes thoughtfully prepared dishes, featuring daily menu changes highlighting the hyper seasonality of the region.

A native New Yorker, Leiken’s interest in cooking was sparked at an early age by his parents, both food enthusiasts who exposed him to the city’s diverse cuisines. After graduating with a history degree from Wesleyan University, he eschewed a possible career in academia for the kitchen, soon honing his skills, and his knives, at highly regarded restaurants such as March with then chef de cuisine Michael Anthony, and Tabla.

Outside the kitchen, Leiken enjoys cycling and is a proud “chicken dad” to a small flock. He lives in Napa with his wife, Candice Chia, a talented baker with a custom cookie business, and their teenage twins.
